Namibia Travel Guide: What to See, Do, and Pack
Dreaming of endless deserts, towering dunes, and wildlife that roams free? Namibia delivers all that and more. Whether you’re planning a short trip or a long safari, this guide breaks down the basics so you can jump straight into adventure.
Top Places You Can’t Miss
Start with Etosha National Park. The waterholes are magnets for elephants, lions, and rhinos, and a sunrise game drive feels like a wildlife documentary. Next, head to Sossus Vlei in the Namib Desert. The red dunes climb over 300 meters – perfect for sunrise photos and sandboarding if you’re feeling bold.
Don’t overlook the coastal town of Swakopmund. It mixes German colonial charm with Atlantic waves. Try sand dune surfing, quad biking, or just stroll the beachfront promenade. For culture lovers, Windhoek offers museums, markets, and a taste of local cuisine – don’t skip the traditional meat stew called “oshifima.”
Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip
Visas are easy for most travelers; a short‑stay visa on arrival covers up to 90 days. The local currency is the Namibian dollar, which is interchangeable with the South African rand, so you can use either.
Driving is the best way to explore. Rent a 4×4, keep a spare tire, and fill the tank whenever you can – stations are sparse in remote areas. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat; the sun out here is strong even on cloudy days.
Internet access is limited outside cities. Download maps and any essential info before you leave the main towns. If you plan to camp, most parks have designated sites with basic facilities; booking ahead during high season (June‑August) guarantees a spot.
Health-wise, malaria isn’t a concern in most of Namibia, but a few northern regions have low risk. Talk to your doctor about a short course of prophylaxis if you’ll be near the Caprivi Strip.
Finally, respect the environment. Stick to marked trails, don’t feed wildlife, and pack out all trash. Namibia’s sparse landscape makes it easy for litter to linger for months.
With these highlights and tips, you’re ready to experience Namibia’s stark beauty and warm hospitality. Pack your bags, grab a sturdy pair of boots, and let the adventure begin.
